The Simplest DC Motor?
Materials
1.5 V D-Cell Battery
Small Disk magnet
2 Jumbo or (large) paper clips Electrical or duct tape Sandpaper
1 meter of#26 or #28 Magnet wire
Motor Supports
Take a large paper clip and open according to the views in order from left to right in the picture above.
Start with the first figure and start with the clip held as shown. Open up the bottom about 30 degrees and grab the small loop inside and simply with your fingers flip the loop vertically. Take some pliers and go up 1/2 way as shown in the third figure and bend with a 90 degree angle. Now take and squeeze the 90 degree angle together to resemble the forth figure. Make two of these.
Armature (Loop of wire)
Wrap the magnet wire around the end of a broom stick handle ten times leaving approx. 5 inches extra on both ends. Slide the loop off the handle.and take the ends of the wire and wrap them around the loops. Start by taking one end and going inside the loop wrapping around the loops and going back inside again. Do this to both end until the two wires are 180 degrees from each other. Straighten the ends and hold loop vertically over a table as shown in the next picture and sand the enamel off lightly and do this to the other wire.
Assembly
Tape the magnet to battery as shown the in picture. Tape on the motor supports as shown. Set the finished loop in mounts and and this wonderfully simple motor is complete.
